Our Story

From a small consultancy to New Zealand's leading financial advisory firm

Topsyturvied was founded in 2008 by Sarah Mitchell and James Wong, two financial analysts with a shared vision for transforming how businesses approach financial planning. Starting with just three clients in a small office in Wellington, our founders recognized a critical gap in the market: the need for financial consulting that focused on sustainability and long-term growth rather than short-term gains.

The name "Topsyturvied" was chosen to reflect our approach of turning traditional financial thinking upside down – challenging conventional wisdom and developing innovative strategies that consider both immediate needs and future sustainability.

The 2008 global financial crisis hit just months after our founding, but instead of faltering, we thrived by helping businesses navigate economic uncertainty through robust financial planning and strategic budgeting. This period established our reputation for delivering stability in volatile times.

By 2012, our client base had expanded to include medium-sized enterprises across New Zealand, and we moved to our current headquarters on Willis Street in Wellington. In 2015, we launched our proprietary Budget Control Matrix, revolutionizing how our clients monitor and optimize their financial operations.

Today, Topsyturvied serves over 350 clients across New Zealand and has expanded its services to include specialized financial consulting for international businesses with New Zealand operations. Our team has grown to 28 dedicated professionals, but our founding vision remains unchanged: to provide financial clarity and sustainable growth strategies for businesses of all sizes.
